Homebase Studio’s is a creative design centre dedicated to collaboration in new facets for art exhibition, event management, creative & cultural consulting, curatorship, and artist promotion based out of Squamish B.C. and abroad.

Recently owner/operator of Homebase; Stan Matwychuk got together with local Calgary Artschool Artist Mark Kowalchuk for some random freestyled art collabs. Hit the (more) button to read about the process and see these collaborations NOW please.

Having been a fan of Artschool Art for a few years now I’m always stoked to see new peices. I asked Mark about the process behind these peices and here’s what he had to say:

“We (Stan, Mark & Samera Gibson) had just found these tables blank and decided to freestyle on them… They are spraypaint, acrylic, and ink. Basically we started with the green and wood one. Stan worked on the green characters and then let me fill in the negative space after. Collaberating is about taking turns on an object; it’s like playing tennis… You hit the ball then he does then you hit it again. It’s cool to work over the other artists work as long as it works in the design aswell. It’s really fun cause you have a chance to step back and get pumped on what the other guy is putting down and it gives you more ideas when you see where the other artist is going. The second table was the purplish one with all the paint drippings on it. Stan started with his character again. I always gave Stan hometown honours of starting the work seeing as it was his studio and his materials. Then I painted the organic fleshy section – which is supposed to represent ligaments or muscle fibre. Finally Sam was working in the gallery and decided she’d add some drippings to the work to finish it off. The idea is to just live in the moment and not over think it. No planning just do it. The final piece I decided I needed a character to battle Stan’s character. After he painted his buddha like figure that looks like it has a stump for a horn; I decided a horned (unicorn like) businessman would be a good adversary.

Above is the first of five bikes that are being released, the rest are below. The bikes are being raffled off at the US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach, CA. They are really bright but if you’re familiar with Dalek’s work then you know these bikes are right up his alley. Having been a long time fan of Dalek (especially the space monkies) I have to say, the project looks pretty sweet and I’d ride one without an ounce of hesitation. I love me my bull horn bars and the frames look amazing.

This weeks Art Feature is quick and straight to the point about how awesome Yuri Tereshyn is at Graphic Design taking a run through about his history, artworks, and accomplishments. Yuri’s a 23 year old graphic design and freestyle snowboarder based out on Toronto, Ontario and not only an incredible snowboarder, but also incredibley skilled with Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Flash, In Design and Final Cut.

Starting graphic design while in highschool during his grade 9 years, Yuri also hooked up some night courses at Humber College to learn more about Flash, receiving the Communications Technology award upon graduation of highschool. Having completed the Media for Print and Web course, also at Humber College, Yuri is now working full time and creating amazingly compelling visuals. He’s the man behind such websites like Vert Agencies, Connor Dudgeon Photography, and the 2010 Dialogue Headwear website, and also able to create most likely any idea you desire, including Ad Campaigns, Package/DVDs/Brochures, Snowboard Designs and Concepts and stunning Hood Decals for your automobile, that, if broken; could probably fix too!

Check out Yuri’s Online Portfolio located at his website: www.yurisgd.com as your sure to find something visually pleasing with a point of interest in your direction.

With the 2010 Whistler World Ski & Snowboard Festival come and gone now, it’s time for an update on two artists we’ve already featured here; that actually met up at the festival and worked together all week during State of the Art. So without further delay, here’s a quick interview with some after thoughts. All artwork created by Darren and Mark, and all photography by Jamie Miller.

Adam: What’s up guy’s how was the Telus Festival?

Mark: Telus Festival was crazy. I was told it was considered tame by previous years just because of the Olympics just being there. But if that was tame I don’t want to see crazy. Everyday something is going on and almost too much is going on each day. Its basically a snowboard/art/party choose your own adventure. Even about going to which bar for after parties is a dilema.

Darren: Meh, the festival was alright… I was pissed that Mark sold more than me, what a dick. Ha kidding, the festival was awesome, so is Mark, sort of. Kept real busy painting with our little W,A (Whistler Artists) Crew… Had a few social evenings and such, and had to tell a few cougars; no sorry we are all taken…

Adam: Congrats on the engagement by the way Darren! The cougars never learn. Was this your first time attending the festival or is it an annual gathering for you both? Even though you just met, have you attended before?

Darren: Thanks Adam… For me it’s an annual show, one of the bigger of the year. I have been in the show for the past four years and although it only lasts a week it gets more exposure than a gallery would in a month long showing…

Mark: Psh, I got engaged too… Darrens just getting married first… He just made the date earlier… Always a competition with him hahaha, just playing.

This was my first time being invited into the Telus Show and to be honest it was the first year I didn’t apply so maybe thats how you get in. Since it’s the first time I’ve attended I literally had no idea what to expect. I just heard rumours of insanity.

Adam: How has the festival helped shape who you are as individuals and artists? It seems like quite an adventure for sure. Are you under pressure while painting at a big show like that or is more laid back and go with the flow?

Darren: For me this show has shaped me as an artist because a few years ago I had never painted live, let alone in front of hundreds of people. This is one of the things about this show that I love now. Marky mark and I got to do a bunch of live paintings/bashing each other all week; it was good times. Yeah to be totally honest the first two years were super stressful, now it’s totally go with the flow… And with the double g garauntee (and by that I mean Grey Goose mixes…) live painting is a cake walk.

Mark: I didn’t feel pressured at all to be honest… I felt pressured a little when I got drunk and screwed up one of my artworks… hahah but I just got up early and fixed it. Hahah there’s a fine line of being in the zone with a few drinks and being sloppy drunk hahahah but that was a work being displayed so I had time to fix it before anyone saw, and it turned out fine. As for live painting in the show, that doesn’t bother me painting infront of people. I don’t even notice them to be honest… I have something pictured in my head and thats all I think about as I do the work all the other stuff fades away.

Adam: Get any apre-art shredding in?

Darren: Me, no… I was too busy painting. But Mark, I think he did… He does not take the art thing very seriously.

Mark: I shredded like only 1 day… I sent it hard with Sansalone… But to be honest it wasn’t ideal there weather wise… It rained like everyday… I had to snowboard with a garbage bag over my gear.

Adam: Nice! If it’s possible, are you able to break down the over-all experience into four words?

Mark: Four Words: Live Painting Petting Zoo.

Darren: I – am – very – tired.

Adam: You guy’s seem to be pretty good friends. I’m sure there’s a nice bromantic meeting story behind such a bond. Any upcoming colabs we can expect from you? And if so, can you fill in the blanks: cause personally I think it would be rad to see your two styles clash together on _______ as it may positively emphasize _________.

Mark: I think our style works well together because we are both illustrators… His background is graffiti and mine is oil painting and we meet somewhere in the middle. We are just sort of thinking up some colabs now.

Darren: No we are not really good friends at all… I just met him a week ago… He is alright I guess. Kind of annoying. He is just always trying to bite my style, you know, like my art, clothing, hair, eye colour (he went and bought colour contacts) yeah I know kinda weird right? Thats what I thought… But hey, I don’t like to be mean so I just went along with it. Don’t tell him though, I would really hate to see his feelings get hurt. Can’t really fill in the blanks at the moment… I am drawing a blank on that one. Get ding dong to fell out those answers! Naw but for real… Mark is a really good guy. We had chatted before the show and just met this week… We were like siamese twins pretty much hung out all week. But for real… he is jealous of me… (laughs.)

Adam: (laughing.) What is art?

Darren: Art is…… Wow that question is WAY too deep for me.

Mark: I don’t know really what is or why we do it as humans. Maybe it dwells from the need to create things… Or maybe it comes from the need to leave our mark on this world physically. All I know is theres ideas in my head that swirl around like a hot tub and I have been fortunate enough to be able to translate those ideas into a product. Maybe art is another form of thought communication that involves no speech but sheer visuals and concepts. Until I know the answer for sure I will just keep on moving forward towards the next work and/or style that I find necessary.

Adam: Anymore upcomming shows and events, plans for the near future? Any shout outs, words of wisdom, or advice to share with beginner artists?

Darren: I will have some upcoming shows happening this summer, as for now my work will be traveling down the road to the House of RTS Gallery in “Sqaumpton.” (Squamish, BC.) I would love to shout out to my best buds (you know who you two idiots are) who always pushed me to be an artists… And I guess… maybe… I’ll shout out Mark too. As for all the little gromlet artists out there… keep your face in your sketchbook and the pen to the paper! Later kiddies.

Mark: I have a solo show next Monday (May 3rd) at Vicious Circle in town… (Remembering that Mark lives in Calgary) so I guess thats pretty recent. I’m trying to get Darren and Stan out this way to do a summer show with me out here. I run a few shows a year so I’ll probably aim to do something by July. Words of wisdom, don’t be afraid to experiment or just make the best work each time… It’s only paint… Just practise, practise, practise… Not every work will be a master peice but thats okay, it’s how one improves. Work with other artists, you’ll pick up new styles and mediums and leave your comfortability zones. And by all means find your own style don’t bite someone elses style that you like, only reason being you won’t stand out, find something that is YOU and people will remember it. Shouts to all good people in the world… You know who you are… And family, always have to mention family.

Adam: Thanks alot for the time guy’s!

This week’s Art Feature showcases Darren Camplin, an artist who arises out of Vancouver, B.C. I got in touch with Darren last week and asked him, “what’s new?” Read along after the jump to check out his artwork and see what he had to say. And check out his website:

www.darrencamplin.com

Words and Artwork by DCE.

SO, my name is Darren Camplin. I guess you would say I’m an artist, at the moment this does not occupy all my time because I would unfortunatly not be able to pay all my bills… and that would be bad.

I started taking my art seriously about four years ago during a big show in Whistler called Brave Art. Four years later I am preparing for the same upcoming show now re-named State of the Art. This takes place every year during the Telus Festival in Whistler, sick show!

I will pretty much paint anything I can get my hands on. I have painted anything from skate shoes to Sandbox snowboard helmets and anything in between. I also show a lot in the city at Ayden Gallery and now a couple shows at the Chapel in East Van. I would classify my work as fairly illustrative which is why I feel it works on most mediums. Although I really love getting back to my roots and throwing down on canvas.

As for where I am at now with my art career I feel like the inspiration comes from the little men marching around in my head… I have an imagination that could rival a ten year old. As for when I was ten… when I was scribbling in my books, I really did look to skate and snow graphics and aspired to do work like that when I grew up. Well I’m grown up and look what I’m doing! Barely getting by on an artist salary… ha no really I could not be happier doing what I’m doing.

Make sure to check the site/blog: www.darrencamplin.com as I’m always down for commissions, and any other ideas you may have throw em my way! Thanks, Darren!

Thanks Darren! Here are a few more peices of his work below. Give em a click to enlarge. Than afterwards check his website to see his past years work, up-comming events, and also Darren’s blog found at www.darrencamplin.blogspot.com!

That’s right ya’ll! Yuh-all… You guys! As you all know TheNewNew has it’s classic “Photo of the Week” section going but what you may not know, until now, is that a new section is coming along starting TODAY. “Photo of the Week” got lonely and needed some friends, so we have decided to create the new “Artwork of the Week” section as well to keep it company! This section gives way to snow/skate inspired artwork, so if yours draws from any of the aforementioned lifestyles drop a line to info@thenewnew.ca to get some submissions rolling! We’ll also be tossing up art that catches our eyes from various other places around the web as well but submissions are always welcome! You know how it goes; the more the merrier! Check out the first peice after the jump!

This first creation is a photo-cubic public art project by Andrew Owen (A01) who is an artist based out of Vancouver, Canada. This peice was located at Kensington Ave, in Toronto Ontario and the photo of such creation was captured by Sarah. Give her name a click to check out more images alike and also check out Andrew’s website to see more of his awesome artwork!
