As the 5^th stop in the KRJ series with only the finals left to go, everyone was hyped on the weekend-long Big White event on March 27-28 – especially since the resort hadn’t hosted an all-girls shred event since 2006! The event’s unique format offered riders a freestyle clinic led by female coaches on day one, and a fun jam format contest on day two.

Saturday morning we were happily surprised to welcome 30cms of fresh powder, and blue skies even decided to join the party as the riders and coaches headed out to the lifts. There was a chairlift best joke contest to break the ice and then everyone ripped down the hill to warm up in the pow pow. The 6 female certified coaches separated the riders into two groups – with a rider to coach ratio of 4:1, the progression session in the private jib park was bound to be good times! After the BBQ lunch, complete with fruit snacks and Monster energy drink, the game of K.I.N.K.Y went down with a tough match  between Shayna and Lizzay for the win…in the end it was a 5-0 tail grab that won Lizzay the custom-made Flave hoodie!

Mother Nature was obviously out on a bender on Saturday, because Sunday’s moist and foggy weather resembled a rough hangover! The riders gathered at the custom-designed hike park at the bottom of the Telus Park which was full of fun boxes of all shapes and sizes, as well as a street-style shotgun rail and an up-flat kink rail. Music was pumpin’ thanks to DJ Tyy Clark while two of our favourite Big White personalities Kenrae Dorsey and Corey Kowalski were calling tricks on the mic and asking random trivia questions to give away candy and Danish toques. The Telus Park and Event staff kept the park pristine all day and fired up hot dogs for the ladies.

The contest started with the beginner ladies where they threw down the tricks they learned the day before – going from basic 50-50s all the way to frontside boardslides landing switch, tail presses and nose presses, and even spinning on and off the boxes! All of the girls showed insane progression from one day to the next and everyone was stoked to watch them ride. The intermediate jam was definitely heated with lots of tweaked out slides, combos, and spins onto the features. Then came the sudden-death advanced jam that everyone had been waiting for… danishes and pretzels and sweepers, oh my! Mega tricks were being thrown down faster than you could holler out a ‘woop woop’ – check out the video below to see what I mean. We capped off the day with a Most Rugged Trick contest on the rainbow box to win a $250 Nikita shopping spree, before everyone made their way to the village for the handstand and limbo contests at the awards ceremony.
